5 Ways Going Green Can Improve Your Health

Going Green is Good for Health

When you make small changes to live a little greener, you aren’t just helping the environment. In fact, there are some green changes that you can make to can improve your health as well. You might be surprised to learn how much better you feel, in terms of your health, when you make a few changes to live more sustainably. Here are 5 ways going green can improve your health:

1. More Exercise, Fewer Emissions

One of the best ways to improve your health while helping the environment is to exercise more as you go to work or run errands. Walking or biking to work provides you with more heart-healthy exercise, while at the same time you are putting fewer pollutants into the air since you aren’t driving your car. You can even use a bike to run errands, since there are specially made “riders” — grocery bags that you can use with your bike.

Even if you don’t walk or bike all the way to work, you can get a little more exercise while reducing emissions by taking public transportation. Walking to and from the bus stop increases your exercise, if only by a little, and using public transit means that you are helping to reduce overall emissions.

2. Less Meat, More Produce

While you don’t have to go vegetarian or vegan to be greener and live healthier, you can improve your health by reducing your overall intake of meat. As a society, we have been adding more and more meat to our diets. If you replace just one meat entree a week with a vegetarian dish, you can lower your cholesterol a little, increase your intake of fiber from more natural sources, and reap other health benefits. And, because the process of raising meat for the dinner table takes more energy and produces more emissions that raising vegetables, you can add your bit to better sustainability.

3. Buy Locally Grown Produce

When produce is shipped in from thousands of miles away, the trucks that carry it put out a lot of emissions. On top of that, the produce is often picked early so that it does not spoil on its journey of thousands of miles. Some nutritionists claim that fruit and vegetables that haven’t ripened on the vine offer fewer helpful nutrients than produce that is picked closer to peak ripeness. Buying local — at farmer’s markets or at the local grocery — can mean produce that is better for you, chock full of nutrients. And it also means that fewer emissions went into getting it to your table. Bonus if you can get locally raised meat.

4. Gardening: Exercise and Nutrients

One of the ultimate ways to get locally grown produce is to grow it yourself. Gardening is a good way to get exercise for your body, as well as a good way grow produce that you can pick at the proper ripeness for all the nutrients. You can also control what pesticides are present, and you will be reducing emissions since you won’t even have to drive to the store or market for your produce. Produce from large gardens can be frozen, preserved for later in the year, and it is even possible to grow a few things in small spaces and containers for those who live in apartments.

5. Reduce the Chemicals in Your Environment

Studies have shown that chemicals in the environment can affect the health of you and your children. The products you buy for your children, and for use in your home, are not just bad for the environment. They can also be bad for your family. Look for greener toys and consider the types of chemicals you use in your home. Many household cleaners can be replaced by water, vinegar and lemon juice — all of which are less harmful than the chemicals you buy in the store. Breathing in some chemicals can result in respiratory problems, and some irritate the skin, causing rashes. You can increase your overall health just by being aware of what you are bringing into your environment and reducing the harmful items.

Economics of Going Green

Why traditional non-green products appear to be cheaper?

Buying commercial chemical infused or chemically processed products are easy on the wallet and most of us are used to it. These products are cheap because extensive R&D and marketing dollars have already been spent and recouped by the major consumer products companies. But the total price we pay to buy and use these products also includes the damage done to the environment during the production, packaging, transportation, usage,  and disposal of the used product in the form of green house emissions, fossil fuel usage, energy use, recycling and trashing. These costs are real and tangible and we all pay for it one way or other but it does not show up in the product cost and in many cases the companies profiting from these products do not even have to worry about these social costs.

But green products maybe better economically for the society

Green and eco friendly products on the market today may appear expensive but they have internalized the social costs to a large degree. Which means that the costs of environmental damage and remediation have been substantially reduced by using these products. Which is a good news made even better when you consider that you and your children will be able to live in a greener world and breathe cleaner air.

But this is not all. Increasing acceptance of these products will drive down the prices lower as the R&D and overhead costs in the production and supply chain of these companies start to spread out. Economies of scale will also make the production process more efficient. While it is difficult to put numbers to this, it is not inconceivable that even in purely economic terms (not counting the environmental benefits), a green and eco lifestyle may overall be a cheaper lifestyle. Health benefits of going green are another positive.

Wouldn’t that be something to look forward to?

And all it takes is to continue to support companies and businesses that provides eco friendly products and services.

10 Easy Ways to Go Green

Take First Steps Towards Going Green with these 10 easy ideas

When many of us think of going green, images of sacrifice tend to predominate. We think of going green as a hardship. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that difficult. You really can take steps to live a greener lifestyle. And once you see how easy it is to make some changes, you might be encouraged to continue toward more sustainable living.

You don’t have to experience a green makeover overnight. Small steps in the right direction will help you develop long-term habits on your way to a greener future.

Here are 10 relatively painless things you can do to get started on a green lifestyle

  1. Pick your produce: Think about purchasing organic produce. At the very least, consider produce that is low in pesticides. You can also help out by buying produce from local sources — like farmer’s markets.
  2. Grow your own food: It really doesn’t take much to grow some of your own produce. You don’t have to have a huge garden, though. Start small with container gardening for small spaces, and start with plants that don’t require a lot of work.
  3. Bring your own bag: You can buy reusable shopping bags, but you don’t have to rely on the store. Use an old tote, or bring the plastic shopping bags from your last trip for reuse until they wear out. It won’t cost you anything, and you can live greener.
  4. Check the labels: When you buy organic items at the store, you need to be careful, since there are no uniform standards for certifying something “organic”. But you take a couple of minutes to check for these trusted labels: USDA Organic, Fair Trade Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Green Seal and Certified Humane.
  5. Drink from a bottle: Not the “disposable” kind you buy at the store! Invest in a water bottle made from stainless steel (with a chemical free liner), and use that to keep you hydrated. Refill with filtered tap water, or from the drinking fountain. Most cities have more stringent tap water requirements than what you’ll find with “pure spring water” in plastic bottles, anyway.
  6. Solar powered outdoor lighting: You can take gradual steps toward solar power for use in your home. Start by converting your outdoor lighting to solar energy with floodlights, motion sensor lights, pathway lights and even bug zappers to the kind that charge up during the day with help from the sun.
  7. Counter-top composting: It’s really not stinky! There are a number of companies that make composters meant for the counter-top. You can use them (usually ceramic with filters) for food scraps and then spread the resulting compost in your garden.
  8. Stop idling in your car: Avoid the drive-through window when possible. Idling puts pollution in the air, and uses resources. This is especially true when there is a long line at the window. Park your car, and walk into the building to conduct your transactions. You’ll get a little extra exercise as well.
  9. Reduce your junk mail: You can sign up with the Direct Marketing Association’s Mail Preference Service (dmaconsumers.org) to adjust your preferences regarding junk mail. You’ll be reducing the number of trees used, and you’ll be happier with fewer annoying advertisements in your mail box.
  10. Replace one meaty meal a week: Consult a vegetarian cookbook or vegetarian recipe site VegWeb.com for delicious recipes that don’t require meat. Replace one meat entree a week with a vegetarian entree. It’s a good way to start on a path of eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, as well as reducing your meat consumption, which takes a great deal of energy to bring to the table.

Why connect with Naturigy on Facebook and Twitter?

There are many reasons. We believe that the community as a concept is now undergoing a resurgence in America. Technology played a part in speeding up our lives and pulling us apart, so to speak. Now it is the same technology that is helping us come closer together. Naturigy wants to know what you are thinking so we can offer the best products and the services that you really want. You can sound off and make your voices heard, and we will listen.

Additionally, Facebook and Twitter also create an avenue for Naturigy (and other companies) to really connect with our customers and reward them. In the future, Facebook and Twitter are likely to become very very important to businesses all around, including Naturigy as many deals and discounts will be offered exclusively on these platforms.

In old days, a company would need to spend a great deal of money to reach customers, many of whom would be uninterested in the products/services offered. This expense would flow back to the customers who actually bought the products or services in form of higher prices. The new forms of community allow us to reach consumers who are genuinely interested in what we offer resulting in lower costs and prices all around.

It is a real winning proposition for both you and us, wouldn’t you think so?

Launching Naturigy.com Blog for Your Eco-friendly Lifestyle

If you have not already, check out the Naturigy.com store.

We feel that consumers are now getting more aware of the environmental impact of the products they buy and use and are looking for access to more eco-friendly products. Buying organic and natural products do not only lead to a healthier lifestyle, one where dependence on potentially harmful chemicals is reduced, but it also leads to a healthy planet.

How we choose which products to carry?

Each product that we decide to offer at Naturigy.com has been carefully handpicked. There are two main criteria that we use in selecting a product

  1. The product is made of natural and organic ingredients, many times using green and sustainable production methods, or,
  2. The product helps in reducing waste and global warming by enabling reuse and lifestyle changes that positively impact the environment

We are not going to change the world in one shot, no matter what we do. The key to a long term impact is for all of us to adopt aspects of eco-friendly lifestyle, however incremental, and than build on that. Supporting businesses and products that help us do this is one of the easiest ways to start.

Does eco-friendliness means you have to give up creature comforts?

Not at all. While modern chemistry has indeed made life much more comfortable, many eco-friendly alternatives exist for some of the mainstream products you use everyday. True, these alternatives are not widely known or very well marketed (with a few exceptions). However, you will be amazed at the choices that are now available, but you did not know about, to fit everyone’s budget and lifestyle.

The large consumer products corporations, like it or not, have vested interest in continuing to push the same products and formulations that they have been pushing to the consumers for decades. It is simple economics, they have invested tremendous amount of capital developing these products and their market share and they will not easily give it up. It is up to us, the consumers to initiate the change.

Beginning of something new?

Quite possibly! We do feel that a change is in the air. We all know that our actions are hurting the environment and we need to do something about it. Now is the time, tomorrow is too late!

We are right there with you.
